St. Stephen's Beliefs

The scenic town of Franklin, nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina, is home to Saint Stephen's Anglican Church, a mission congregation of the Anglican Church in America. Saint Stephen's has a simple agenda: to worship God, to preach the Gospel of Christ Jesus our Lord, and to disciple believers

Worship at St.Stephen's

At Saint Stephen's, we are energized and equipped for mission through worship. The principal act of Christian worship from the beginning has been the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper - also called the Holy Eucharist, the Divine Liturgy, or simply the Mass - and we celebrate this sacrament every week. We use the classic Book of Common Prayer as the basis of our worship and supplement it with elements drawn from the rich liturgical traditions of the universal Church, both eastern and western. Our service music is largely found in the Hymnal 1940, once the highly-regarded standard hymnal of the Episcopal Church. These resources give our worship a character of joyful dignity appropriate to the nature of the God we worship. We encourage you to participate in this offering as far as your conscience allows. We do not discourage any baptized person from receiving Holy Communion; however, we do want you to be sure that you understand that, according to the teaching and practice of the Catholic Church as received in the Anglican tradition, you should only do so if you have been confirmed by a bishop in the succession of the apostles (or are ready and desirous of being confirmed), you repent of your sins, are in love and charity with your neighbors, and you genuinely intend to lead the new life in Christ. Receiving communion is an individual public testimony by communicants not only that they meet these standards, but also that they are at one with the Church's teaching about faith and morals.
